PunePune, also known as Oxford of the East, is the second largest city in the state of Maharashtra and has a population of around 5 million. While the city was known for its engineering and manufacturing prowess, as well as its educational excellence and a destination for second homes/retirement homes until the 1990s, the influx of major IT-ITeS companies over the last decade has allowed it to emerge as a premier office destination for the country.

Proximity to Mumbai, comparatively lower real estate costs, and availability of skilled human resources have been the key drivers for the emergence of Pune as a key real estate destination in the country.

Due to sustained economic and population growth, high disposable incomes, increasing cosmopolitan culture and emergence of new markets, Pune has emerged as an attractive destination for global retailers. Until a few years ago, Pune had limited shopping centres and main streets were the favourite locations for retailers.

Post 2010, with the emergence of shopping centres in the eastern corridor of Pune, several international and premium brands have opened shops.

International retailers such as Marks & Spencers, Zara, Diesel, Guess, Steve Madden, Nautica, L’Occitane, Body Shop, FCUK, Vero Moda, Bebe and La Senza have established their presence in the shopping centres. Brands such as Forever 21, Dunkin Donuts, Harley Davidson and Burger King have opened up their stores in shopping centres.
