A conjunction of several points of tourist interest, provided Porto with a trendy, cosmopolitan, chic and cool atmosphere, reflecting the spirit of the city whether classic or modern, whether traditional or contemporary.
With a population of circa 1.8 million people, Porto is the second most densely populated region in Portugal and enjoys a privileged location, facing the northern bank of the River Douro. The historic centre of Porto is considered as World Heritage by UNESCO, and the city has gained more recently a strong interest from international tourists. The prime retail high street areas are Rua de Santa Catarina and Clérigos, carved with must-visit places (such as Café Majestic, Lello Book Shop or Clérigos Tower). With the recent renewal of the Clérigos area, complemented with the opening of Passeio dos Clérigos, an open air retail gallery, Porto gained a trendy and modern destination, attracting younger consumers and up market retailers to the city.
Baixa - RUA DE SANTA CATARINABaixa, or downtown, is the most traditional retail destination in Porto. Its main hub is Rua de Santa Catarina, which offers over 60,000 sq.m of retail supply, together with a 12,000 sq.m GLA shopping centre, Via Catarina. After a long period of stagnation, due to the opening of more modern shopping centres on the city outskirts, this area is now gaining the dynamics of the past and shows increasing levels of footfall both from locals and tourists.
CLÉRIGOSOver the last few years, this location has benefited from a more dynamic environment and has succeeded in attracting restaurants and leisure operators together with trendy mass and medium-high level brands. This cluster of high street retail is still attracting a significant level of interest from major domestic and international brands, benefiting from the area’s tourist traffic over the years as a whole.

The anchor shops are Toys’r’us, Worten, Cortefiel, Zara, C&A, Fnac, Maxmat. The number of visitors per year is around 10 million. Gaia shopping has excellent road infrastructures nearby such as the A1 motorway, which links Porto to Lisbon.
