Maastricht

MaastrichtMaastricht is one of the major cities of the south of the Netherlands. The city has a strong regional position but also attracts many consumers from various regions in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. The major shopping area in Maastricht is the historic city centre, while additionally Maastricht has one district centre and several smaller neigbhourhood shopping centres. The city has approximately 167,680 sq.m of retail space, which is approximately 1.4 sq.m of retail space per capita. This is above the national average of 1.13 sq.m per capita.

The Maastricht Aachen Airport, one of the larger airports in the Netherlands, is an increasingly important hub in the region. Although the airport historically was mostly favoured for private jets, it is nowadays also home to budget airline Ryanair for which it is an important airport. During the internationally leading art and antiques fair the TEFAF however, the airport is always fully occupied by private jets. The TEFAF is held in the congress centre the MECC which hosts a number of congresses during the year and makes that Maastricht is one of the largest congress cities of the Netherlands.

While a number of cities across the Netherlands has been struggling over the past years to remain attractive for consumers, Maastricht is still considered as one of the best retail cities of the country. Its historic centre, combined with the facilities in the centre and the attractiveness to both domestic and international tourists makes Maastricht still an attractive destination for both domestic and international retailers. As a result, rental levels have hardly been under pressure in the city and competition for the best areas of the main streets is still fierce.
