Ahmedabad, the commercial capital of the prosperous state of Gujarat is also the seventh largest city of India. It was formerly known as the “Manchester of the East” for being the largest textile producer in the country. Traditionally, the retail industry in this city has been driven by the main streets, typical of Indian cities. The old city still has product-specific retail markets. The city is dominated by the presence of a strong business community, which is the backbone of the state’s economy.
Ahmedabad is divided into two areas by the Sabarmati River: East and West Ahmedabad. The eastern part comprises of the old walled city and industrial areas, as well as the upcoming location of Maninagar. The western part of Ahmedabad is mainly inhabited by the middle class and affluent population. This part of the city is the hub for major main street locations such as C.G. Road, Ashram Road and S.G. Road and also hosts many shopping centres, showing the city’s adaptation to modern retail trends.
Due to the higher spending power and increasing brand consciousness of the globetrotting Gujarati business community, the city has witnessed a large penetration of retail brands in recent times. Shopping centres such as Alpha One Mall, Iscon Mega Mall, Gulmohar Park and Himalaya Mall are witnessing sizeable footfalls due to the shift in consumer preferences from local brands to national and international brands. Prominent national multi-brand retailers such as Hypercity, Shoppers Stop, Westside and international brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Vero Moda, Swatch, Swarovski, Hamleys, Esprit, amongst others have established their base in the city.

This road caters to a variety of brands and products including restaurants and eateries such as McDonalds, Honest, Little Italy, Uncle Sams Pizza, Dominos, Atithi, etc.
PRAHLADNAGARLocated adjacent to S.G. Highway, this area is fast developing as a business district due to saturation in other parts of the city and a boom in the residential construction activity off S.G. Highway. The rentals are low compared to S.G. Highway and many multinational companies and large, local businesses have established their presence in this location. This area has mainly caught the attention of several Food & Beverage (F&B) brands, with many new restaurant chains opening outlets along the stretch. Key retailers operating in this location include Nike, UCB, Dominos, Mc Donalds, Ford, etc.
ASHRAM ROADThe oldest main street location in Ahmedabad, Ashram Road was the busiest commercial destination of the city until a few years ago. It is the financial hub of the city and houses many old shopping complexes and government offices. The shopping centre culture has yet not penetrated this location. It is home to the city’s earliest multiplexes and the first McDonalds restaurant. It continues to enjoy the distinction of being a premier main street. The street is seeing a revival in interest from retailers due to the increasing redevelopment activities for upcoming commercial complexes and hotels.
